American Experience: Stonewall Uprising
When police raided the Stonewall Inn, a popular gay bar in the Greenwich Village section of New York City on June 28, 1969, the street erupted into violent protests that lasted for the next six days. The Stonewall riots, as they came to be known, marked a major turning point in the modern gay civil rights movement in the United States and around the world.

Damn 10pm here....and that's far too late for my 3:45am wake up. Couldn't Stonewall happen earlier in the day?
It's a landmark event! I've been at that bar, but at the time I really had no idea of the events that happened there - that was a few years ago! Truly moving - but things can only get better right?
Thanks for this post. I viewed the documentary. It was very informative and thought provoking.
When one sees the way supposedly respected academics and medical professionals, not to mention clergy, villified gays as defective abnormals, it is no wonder that manys gays who are now in their 60s and 70s were reluctant to come out. The ignorance and homophobia that was so prevalent deeply imprinted many gays making them feel unworthy and less than. This affected every part of their existence.
There has been some remarkable progress, but it needs to continue.

On the subject of it being better today, I remember that old CBS documentary, 'The Homosexuals.' Horrid stuff, but required viewing IMO just to see how far we've come.
