Last Thursday I had an all-day meeting in our Boston office. I assumed I would end up walking out with a long list of action items. What I did not anticipate was that I would end up joining my firm's GLBT affinity group.
Although I'm 100% out at work I never contemplated joining the firm's affinity group. I was a bit surprised by the request when it was made mostly because of the source and felt compelled to say yes, but now that I've given it some thought I think it might be both interesting and help me meet more co-workers here in Boston.
Does your employer have a GLBT affinity group and if so do you belong to it? If so,do you like it, or are the members reminiscent of those kids who would file off to band camp each summer?

i do not tell people i am gay, i believe they catch on. when i get to a certain point of comfort i will just be in conversation and say "i had a date with a guy matt" or "i went to club cafe this weekend"
I began working for my company via an acquisition. Since I work from home I thought it might be a good way to build my network and virtually meet people throughout the organization.
I'm not sure if it's my company, the group or the fact that I'm so far from HQ, but it hasn't been particularly helpful or useful in any way.
Why do GLBT's need an affinity group?
Why indeed. I can understand why they've come about and can see how they might help with recruiting, but I've never belonged to an affinity group before and I'm curious to see if it adds any value. Time will tell I suppose.
I'm curious to see how your experience goes. We don't have anything like this at my office job, but then there are only 2 other "out" gay guys that I know of. There are probably more (total 250 employees) but they either keep it under wraps or they're working in some dark, basement corner where I never see them!
